New cancer cases, deaths on upward trend: report

Both new cases and deaths from cancer are expected to increase this year in Canada over 2007, the Canadian Cancer Society predicts.

Newly released statistics from the society show 166,400 new cases of cancer anticipated this year, an increase of 6,500 over the previous year. And 73,800 people will die of the disease, up by 1,100 over last year.

The report, released Wednesday, cites the aging and expanding population as being behind the anticipated rise.

In terms of gender breakdown, the overall cancer death rate for men continues to decline, as it has done since 1988, due to decreases in death rates of lung, colorectal and other cancers. As well, the overall cancer incidence rate for men is in on a downward curve and the report predicts this will continue.

While decreases in incidence rates in stomach, larynx and lung cancer in men have been observed, there has been an increase in liver and thyroid cancers in this group.

Prostate cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men.

Among women, the overall death rate for women has remained stable since 1979. The overall cancer incidence rate has been increasing slowly and steadily.

While incidence rates in women decreased for stomach, larynx, brain and cervical cancers, more women are getting thyroid cancer, finds the report.

Lung cancer rates in women are also continuing on an upward trend, though breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in this group.

Protesters fear Olympic torch will spark violence, Chinese crackdown in Tibet

TORONTO - Fearing more blood will be spilled, protesters called on China and the International Olympic Committee to scrap plans to run the Olympic torch relay through Tibet during a peaceful demonstration in Toronto that coincided with Wednesday's arrival of the flame in San Francisco - its only North American stop.

They also urged the international community to boycott the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Games in August to show solidarity with Tibetans chafing under a violent Chinese crackdown.

"The situation is very tense," said Sonam Dorjee of the Tibetan Joint Action Committee.

"If they still continue to carry the torch through Tibet and to Mount Everest, Tibetans are going to rise up again, and this will give an excuse to the Chinese government to use more force. We fear that it might turn into another bloodshed in Tibet."

Torch runs through London and Paris had turned violent. The demonstration Wednesday across the road from the Chinese Consulate in Toronto was peaceful.

About 125 protesters chanted "Free Tibet!" and "Shame on China!" as they waved flags and placards behind a barricade while RCMP and city police watched. There were no incidents.

"We came here to call the international community to support us in asking China to stop killing in Tibet," said Kunga Tsering, a former member of Tibet's parliament.

"(But) the present regime in Beijing is an uncivilized regime, and we don't know how much effect (the protests) will have."

Tsering stressed that the protesters were not anti-Chinese, and rejected the notion the demonstrators were terrorists as Beijing has said.

The Olympic Games and politics are inextricably mixed, he said, noting that Taiwan boycotted the Montreal Olympics in 1976 after Canada bowed to Chinese pressure and refused to allow Taiwanese athletes to compete as the Republic of China.

Across the street from the protest, a steady stream of visitors came and went from the busy consulate, with many applying for or picking up visas.

One of them, Denys Decatanzaro, said he was heading to China for a month as part of an academic exchange organized months ago.

"It bothers my conscience a little but I feel I have to honour my (commitment to go)," said Decatanzaro, a professor at McMaster University.

Decatanzaro said he sympathized with the protest, saying Tibet has "many legitimate grievances."

Chinese communists troops occupied Tibet in 1951, and Beijing continues to rule the region with a heavy hand.

China clamped down hard on Tibet a month ago after anti-government protests erupted. Dozens of people were killed and scores arrested.

China says it has ruled Tibet for centuries, although many Tibetans say they were essentially an independent state for most of that time.

The Olympic torch, which began its 137,000-kilometre journey from Ancient Olympia in Greece to Beijing on March 24, has been the focus of protests from the start.

Dorjee said the international community has an obligation to press China to improve its human rights record.

What is.... AA & AF

What is Antialiasing??

anti-aliasing is the technique of minimizing the distortion artifacts known as aliasing when representing a high-resolution signal at a lower resolution. Anti-aliasing is used in digital photography, computer graphics, digital audio, and many other domains.

Anti-aliasing means removing signal components that have a higher frequency than is able to be properly resolved by the recording (or sampling) device. This removal is done before (re-)sampling at a lower resolution. When sampling is performed without removing this part of the signal, it causes undesirable artifacts such as the black-and-white noise

In signal acquisition and audio, anti-aliasing is often done using an analog anti-aliasing filter to remove the out-of-band component of the input signal prior to sampling with an analog-to-digital converter. In digital photography, optical anti-aliasing filters are made of birefringent materials, and smooth the signal in the spatial optical domain. The anti-aliasing filter essentially blurs the image slightly in order to reduce resolution to below the limit of the digital sensor (the larger the pixel pitch, the lower the achievable resolution at the sensor level).

anisotropic filtering (abbreviated AF) is a method of enhancing the image quality of textures on surfaces that are at oblique viewing angles with respect to the camera where the projection of the texture (not the polygon or other primitive it is rendered on) appears to be non orthogonal. Like bilinear and trilinear filtering it eliminates aliasing effects, but introduces less blur at extreme viewing angles and thus preserves more detail. Anisotropic filtering is relatively expensive (usually computationally, though the standard space-time tradeoff rules apply) and only became a standard feature of consumer-level graphics cards in the 1990s. Anisotropic filtering is now common in modern graphics hardware and enabled either by users through driver settings or by graphics applications & video games through programming interfaces.

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot, one of the most popular places of interest in Bali, is located on the coast of West Bali, at the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency.
It is also called Tanah Let which means ancient land and also Tanah Lod, which means the land to the south.

The temple Pura Tanah Lot, simple in its construction, is dramatic in its ocean-front location and is one of the main temples in the worship of Balinese gods.

Tanah Lot has a long history in the world of tourism.
The temple itself is built on a small promontory which is only accessible at low tide.
During high water the rock takes on the appearance of a large boat at sea, such is its shape.

Poisonous snakes live in the nearby caves to 'guard' the temple and contribute to the temple's dangerous reputation.

Sunset is the best time to visit Tanah lot, when the golden red skies frame the temple and waves crash into the rocks.
It is advisable to avoid the tourist crush here as it can be severe.

The Trendy Double Six Beach

It’s all about soaking up the sun in the trendiest beach in Bali. Double Six Beach is the perfect beach to show off that gym-enhanced form, accompanied by an adorable Chihuahua and a bottle of ice-cold beer. Frequented by European expats and tourists, the Seminyak area is arguably the hub of style and fashion in Bali… and the Double Six Beach proves that.

If you’re looking for a light cardio workout, simply walk to the Double Six Beach from Kuta, which is about 30 minutes away. Just stroll along Kuta beach and head north. Alternately, it’s a 10-minute drive by car. Despite the proximity, the beach is void of the usual beach scene; no pushy street sellers offering jewelry or beach sarongs, no vendors hawking Bintang Beer T-shirts or Balinese souvenirs. Those are replaced by a row of comfy restaurants and bars facing the beach, some of which have been there for years.

To reach the Double Six beach, you will have to pass through Arjuna Road (also known as Double Six road) and at the end of the road, turn left. The beach stretches from the Jayakarta Hotel to the Double Six Club. However, a livelier route can be found along the Jayakarta Hotel to the De Ja Vu Club, right in front of the restaurants. Double Six Beach’s calm waters are great for swimming and wading children. However, during the rainy season (between December to February), the waves often bring in seaweeds from the ocean, which makes the beach look rather murky.

To truly feel the beach’s vibe, I suggest you to come here in the afternoon, around 4 pm . By that time, you will find motorbikes and several cars parked near the beach and most of the restaurants nearly full. And since you have two more hours before the sun sets, why don’t you go to one of the restaurants and grab a bite? One of my favorites is the Blue Ocean restaurant; their margarita pizza is just perfect. Sit down, enjoy the sun’s warmth, and watch people pass by while having a glass of beer.

The restaurants offer a laid back ambiance; think open air eateries with big trees and lush green plants to make you feel right at home. Plus, the cool breeze and the vacation feel make it easier for people to meet new acquaintances . The last time I went to the Blue Ocean , I met a group of French students who were vacationing in Bali during their long summer break. They seemed to truly enjoy their holiday!

After finishing your drink, walk down the beach and opt to do one of several beach activities; be one of the sun worshippers lying down on the benches scattered along the beach, surf and catch some waves, play volleyball or just swim. Rent the bench (around Rp 20,000/ hour), and listen to the crashing ocean waves. The beach maybe full at this time of day, but still not as full as Kuta. The sunset can be a glorious moment; a magnificent blend of colors, gently fades away as the sun bids you goodbye at the end of the horizon.

Bali's "Mother Temple"

High on the slopes of Bali's Mount Agung sits Pura Besakih, widely referred to as the "Mother Temple" of Hinduism in Bali. Pura Besakih, or Besakih Temple in English, is the largest of the island's 11,000 or so Hindu temples; its 35 shrines and halls draw devotees from all over Bali in massive numbers each year.

The world is lucky to have Besakih. In 1963 Mount Agung, a volcano, erupted and destroyed several nearby villages. Besakih was untouched.

The temple is generally agreed to date back to prehistoric times in Bali. It is named for Naga Besukian -- the dragon-god thought by pre-Hindu Balinese to inhabit this, the highest mountain in Bali. But at the beginning of the 11th Century Besakih became the state temple at a time when Bali was no mean kingdom. It has remained the state temple in some form or another ever since and is state supported today.

Like most Balinese temples, Besakih is not a closed building but a mostly open-air affair. It is made up of courtyards with altars and shrines devoted to a number of gods. And those gods have better things to do than just hang around a temple; the Balinese believe that the gods visit a temple on particular dates -- and on those dates the Balinese hold festivals to honor (or placate) the gods. Of all the temples on Bali six are "supremely holy:" Pura Besakih, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, Pura Gua Lawah, Pura Batukaru, Pura Pusering Jagat, and Pura Uluwatu. Of these, Besakih stands higher than the others -- not because it sits some 3000 or so feet above the ocean on the mountain's side, but because it is more sacred to the Balinese. It is said to be the only classless, casteless temple on the island where any Balinese Hindu can come to worship.

Bali's Hinduism is unique. Many scholars believe it gives us a view of Hindu beliefs much as they existed 1500 to 2000 years ago. Hinduism was once the dominant religion in much of Southeast Asia and empires in the region where ruled by god-kings -- empires like Funan, Sri Vijaya, Angkor, and Bali.

The Hinduism of Bali is less fragmented than that of modern India. Balinese are generally said to worship one god, Brahman, who manifests himself in various forms or personalities.

Lee Arnold, in his article on The Temples of Bali, quotes an anonymous Balinese who explains their views: "I am just one person; someday I might be a farmer, another a driver, yet another a cook, but I am still only one person." In the same way the Hindu "gods" Siva and Vishnu (Siwa and Visnu in Balinese) are really just different manifestations of the one god, Brahman, in Balinese theology. While this may be true, temples generally end up serving as places where one of Brahman's manifestations is worshipped; and Besakih is dedicated largely to Siva worship.

While the Hinduism of Bali may provide a glimpse into the religion's past it is by no means pure. Balinese religion has kept Islam at bay, but has absorbed aboriginal animism and Malay cultic ancestor worship along with aspects of Mahayana Buddhism.

The temple's anniversary, Odalan, is an excellent day to visit if you are looking for pageantry. But you should expect a crowd of several thousand people. That ceremony comes in the tenth month of the Balinese calendar, usually in April.

Wounded East Timor president speaks for first time

SYDNEY (Reuters) - East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta, critically wounded in an assassination attempt in February, spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday, thanking medical staff for saving his life.

Ramos-Horta said he would not issue a political statement but wanted to use the week before Easter to thank world and church leaders for supporting him after the assassination bid by rebels.

The public statement was filmed at a hospital in northern Australia, with Ramos-Horta seated in a chair with an East Timor flag draped behind him.

The president, who suffered serious gunshot wounds which required five surgeries, looked well and spoke clearly, occasionally clearing his voice.

"Today is the first time I am able to speak publicly, although I am reframing from making a political speech," Ramos-Horta said.

"I wish to use this opportunity to thank all who prayed for me, who looked after me, who cared for me, following the assassination attempt on me."

Rebels ambushed Ramos-Horta during an early morning walk on February 11, and also attacked Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.

Ramos-Horta was shot several times in the attack in which rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed, while Gusmao escaped unharmed in the separate attack.

Ramos-Horta received emergency surgery in East Timor and was flown to Darwin in Australia for further medical treatment.

"Here in Darwin I have been very well looked after by everyone...even the humble cleaners, the nurses, the doctors. To them I thank," he said.

Arrest warrants were issued against 17 people suspected of involvement in the attacks, including Gastao Salsinha, who took command of rebel soldiers after Reinado.

Gusmao said on Monday that he hoped a military exercise to round up the remaining rebels, including Salsinha, would end this week. He warned Salsinha to surrender or face the consequences.

Indonesia's growing prospects

If you are an engineer well-versed in networking technology or an experienced network project manager, chances are you will have little difficulty getting a job in Indonesia this year.

"Indonesia is lacking in [IT workers with] wide area networking (WAN) engineering skills and seasoned project managers who can build large, distributed IT networks," Maneck Mohan, founder of Hong Kong-based job search engine company Recruit.net, told ZDNet Asia in an e-mail interview.

Mohan also noted that Indonesia's job market will continue to grow this year, particularly in the IT infrastructure space which was also the hottest growth area in the country in 2006.

This is fuelled by the country's strengthening economy, which will see the economic growth increase from 5.5 percent in 2006 to an estimated 6.3 percent this year, he added.

"On Recruit.net we are seeing seven to 10 new tech jobs added per day, [although] this is not a fair reflection of the market size as many tech jobs in Indonesia are still only advertised offline in newspapers," Mohan said.

According to the results of ZDNet Asia's IT Salary Benchmark 2006 Survey, servers and networking technologies were also the most-often-cited area of expertise by respondents from Indonesia, unlike the rest of the countries surveyed in across Asia. Of the 650 Indonesian respondents who participated in the study, 48 percent have related experience in the area of servers and networking.

Respondents in the manufacturing, services and non-IT sectors in Indonesia are the highest paid, earning an average salary of IDR 109,460,423 (US$12,041) annually. This is higher than the overall average salary of IDR102,379,052 (US$11,231). This is a second trend that is not seen in the rest of the Asian countries surveyed.

IT management positions command the higher end of the payscale, a trend also seen in the other six countries surveyed. Respondents in Indonesia earn an average salary of IDR 146,401,033 (US$16,060) per annum, 43 percent higher than the overall country average of IDR 102,379,052 (US$11,231). Those in Project Development are the second highest-paid in the country, commanding average annual salaries of IDR 125,506,857 (US$13,768), said the report.

Results of the study also showed that, experience does matter. The average annual salary of respondents from Indonesia with more than 10 years' experience is IDR 182,587,371 (US$20,030), which is 58 percent higher than the overall country average.

Amongst the seven Asian countries surveyed, Indonesia not only had the second-lowest overall average annual salary, it also has the second-lowest proportion of respondents with at least one professional certification, at 34 percent. Not surprising, the most popular certification is Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), as networking is the area of expertise most cited by Indonesian respondents.

CENTRAL BANK GOVERNOR CANDIDATE TESTED BY LAWMAKERS

Lawmakers started the fit and proper test for the two candidates for Central Bank governor Monday.

Raden Pardede was first up to present his plans for the country’s controversial Central Bank. He’s currently the number two man in the state owned Asset Management Company (PPA), and is said to be strong in monetary economy.

If chose, Pardede said he will implement policies that will stabilize the economy, and repair the bank’s tarnished image.

But his personal ties were part of lawmakers’ questioning.

"How can you assure us that you won't be entangled in a conflict of interest if you're elected as the central bank governor, considering you have close ties with a number of business conglomerates?" asked Dradjat Wibowo, an 11th Commission member.

Questioning for the other candidate, Agus Martowardojo, was moved to today because Monday’s session with Pardede went overtime.

Martowardojo currently heads the country’s largest state owned Bank Mandiri. He’s credited with making many improvements in the bank that was made up of four struggling state owned financial institutions.

Current Central Bank Governor Burhanudin Abdullah’s term expires on May 17. Abdullah, a suspect in a graft case involving lawmakers, said he’s not seeking a second term.

Earlier in the process lawmakers rejected the president’s nominees because neither comes from within the Central Bank.

Their lack of experience in Central Bank monetary policies has led many lawmakers to doubt their qualifications. But lawmakers will show whether those doubts are answered when they vote on the nomination tomorrow.

Hii I’ve add another good place in bali worth visit, this place located in east bali, it takes estimated 2 hour driving from denpasar, batur is popular because of its beautiful view and it’s lake. Ok here it is…

Batur and Kintamani

A mountain village, Batur is north of Penelokan on the western rim of the crater, with no distinguishable border separating it from Kintamani. The newcomer on the ridge, Batur until 1926 was a prosperous village located at the foot of Gunung Batur. In 1917, the volcano erupted and buried most of the village in lava. This cataclysm took the lives of 1,000 people, destroying 65,000 homes and 2,500 temples. Miraculously, the molten lava stopped short at the gateway of Batur’s village temple.

Kintamani Village
Kintamani is a cool, fresh retreat, bring warm clothes, as it’s cold at night (1,500 meters above sea level). The fog comes rolling into Kintamani early, transforming it into a ghost town of howling ‘anjing’(dog), so you’d best settle in before nightfall. The coldest months are July and August, lots of rain from October to March. Get up early to watch a superb sunrise.

Kintamani has more barking dogs per square meter than any other place on Bali. There’s a busy market every third morning along the highway in the north part of town.

The temples of the area look out over the crater. People come from all over the island to pray here, especially during ‘odalan’. A grand old ‘gong gde’, one of only three on Bali, plays for the ceremony.

Trunyan
The Bali Aga are the island's oldest inhabitants, aboriginals who lived here long before the Majapahit invasion in the 14th century. The first direct evidence of Indic influence on Bali dates from an early copper plate, inscribed A.D. 882-914, referring to the founding of a temple to Batara Da Tonta in Trunyan. His title, Batara, indicates that the Bali Aga's most important ancestor figure was incorporated into the Hindu religion. Legend has it the village was established on the spot where an ancient ‘taru menyan’ tree stood-thus the town’s name. It is said that in ancient times the lake goddess Dewi Danu was lured down from heaven by the lovely scent of this tree.

Today Trunyan is a real tourist trap, and you may not get to experience much more than villagers clamoring for money. Still, the setting is spectacular-green mountain backdrop and deep blue lake, mist-shrouded Gunung Batur rising up dramatically on the other side.
Culturally and ethnically outside the mainstream, Trunyan provides evidence of how Bali’s earliest people lived.

Pura Pancering Jagat
Trunyan’s old temple, Pura Pancering Jagat (”Temple of the Navel of the World”), stands under a massive banyan tree. Unusual architecture abounds in this austere ‘pura’-a fossilized relic of aboriginal Balinese society.

The Kuburan, the Bali Aga prefer exposing their dead in the open air rather than cremating them. Valuable land cannot be given over to the burial of the dead. After complicated rituals, the naked body is first wrapped in white cloth, then placed in a shallow pit, protected from scavengers by a triangular bamboo fence and roof. Those who have committed suicide or who have died of horrible disfiguring diseases are buried.

for u who love trekking u can try this mountain in bali which have very beatiful view from its summit, there is also a lake near the mountain, it's name is batur lake which is the largest lake in bali

Batur Mountain

Mount Batur, located less than an hour from north Bangli, is a mall volcano that still active in this island. Created by an eruption of Mount Batur approximately 30,000 years ago. It sets in the hearth of a huge crater 14 km in diameter and 65 meters deep.

From Penelokan, the main road runs right round the rim towards Kintamani, the panorama shifting as circling around the crater. Danau Batur is Bali’s largest lake and cribbed with the calderas of an active volcano named Gunung Batur.

I have been 3 times just for trekking and camp with my friends, it’s such a wonderful experience.. we need approximetaly 2 hours to climb this mountain …
